Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

This beginner's course focuses on basic greetings, personal information, expressing oneself and introductory grammatical structures. You will also be introduced to elements of the culture. No prior knowledge of the language is required.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • introduce yourself and others
  • provide personal information
  • describe people
  • formulate basic sentences using verbs in present tense.

Content

  • Pronunciation and simple rules
  • Greetings – how to provide and understand personal information
  • The Alphabet – understanding and pronouncing the alphabet, which is a little different to English
  • Personal Pronouns (I, you) – In a sentence, understanding the difference between I, you and we is important in any language
  • Verbs: how to learn and use the most common verbs such as ‘to be’, ‘to be named’, ‘to live’, ‘to like’ and ‘to go’ – and also the common regular verbs ending in -AR
  • Gender: feminine/masculine/singular/plural
  • Introducing someone: by his/her nationality, occupation; age
  • Introducing your family and friends: demonstrative (this/these/those) and possessive pronouns (my/mine, yours)
  • Describing people: adjectives (pretty/handsome, friendly, etc)
  • Articles (the/a/an)
  • Numbers 0-1000
  • Prepositions – in English, these include: by, at, from, in
  • Present tense of regular and Irregular verbs – we will start by focussing on the present tense such as how you’re feeling, where you’re going and what you’re saying
  • Structuring a sentence – how to form basic sentences

Who this course is for

Suitable for beginner A1 level students. No prior knowledge of the language is required.
