Level A1 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR)

This beginner’s course is ideal for preparing for travel or work commitments, as you learn the basics of the language. Grammatical and phonological elements will be introduced as you start working on your French speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. No prior knowledge of the language is required.

Aims

We aim to teach you the basics of French language communication, including: making introductions, learning to count and reciting the French alphabet. This beginner’s level course will prepare you for travel and simple every-day interactions.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • introduce yourself and others
  • spell your name and recite the French alphabet
  • identify the language(s) you speak and your citizenship
  • identify the names of countries
  • identify numbers and count
  • communicate in class
  • say hello and goodbye
  • address someone formally or informally
  • give personal information (phone, email, postal address)
  • ask someone for his/her personal information (phone, email, postal address).

  • Alphabet

  • Gender of country names
  • Preposition of place and countries
  • Communicating in class
  • Introduction to verb conjugations: regular verbs (-er)
  • Introduction to reflexive verbs: s’appeler
  • Irregular verbs: être, avoir - present tense
  • Definite and indefinite articles
  • Negative
  • Possessive adjectives (1)
  • Vocabulary for topics:
    • Countries
    • Calendar
    • Date (days, months, seasons)
    • Numbers
    • Professions (1)
  • Phonetics: accentuation on the last syllabus, alphabet, numbers, verbs (-er/present tense), silent letters and verbal liaison with nous, vous, ils elles. This includes working on specific sounds, tone and rhythm
