Course summary

This course is the third in a series of four Mathematics Standard 2 courses designed to consolidate key content and skills from the Mathematics Standard 2 HSC course. Topics covered include Non-Linear Functions, Annuities, Further Statistics, Critical Paths, and Network Flow.

This course is designed to review key material and provide advice and tips related to studying and examination technique, to maximise student performance.

Other courses in this series include HSC Mathematics Preparation - Standard 2 (Part 1) (January), HSC Mathematics Preparation - Standard 2 (Part 2) (April) and HSC Mathematics - Standard 2 Exam Preparation Course (September), which focuses on preparation for end-of-year examinations. You do not need to attend all parts in order to benefit.

Learning outcomes

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • represent the relationships between quantities algebraically and graphically to solve problems and make predictions in practical contexts
  • analyse normally distributed datasets using statistical processes
  • analyse bivariate datasets using statistical processes
  • apply critical path analysis to solve problems and model decision-making in practical contexts
  • apply network flow concepts to solve problems and model decision-making in practical contexts
  • solve financial problems involving annuities
  • explore and connect mathematical concepts, choose and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems, and communicate thinking and reasoning in a clear and coherent manner.

The following topics from the Mathematics Standard 2 Syllabus (2024) will be covered:

  • Algebraic relationships:
    • Exponential relationships
    • Quadratic relationships
    • Reciprocal relationships
  • Annuities
  • Critical path analysis
  • Network flow
  • Bivariate data analysis
  • The normal distribution

Prerequisites

Students should have completed the Year 11 Mathematics Standard course before undertaking this course.

Who this course is for

This course is suitable for students studying Year 12 Mathematics Standard 2.

Delivery style

Delivered as a two-day, activity-based workshop, this course will explore and apply mathematical knowledge and skills through a combination of lectures, tutorials and problem-solving sessions. Practice exercises are reviewed, and you will receive immediate feedback. Study skills and examination techniques will also be emphasised.
